Let’s start with North America. In the United States, the safety of elevators is mainly regulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The ASME A17.1 code is the go – to standard for elevator safety. This code covers every aspect of elevator design, construction, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and modernization. For example, it has strict rules on elevator brakes. The brakes need to be able to hold the elevator car and counterweight in place under all normal and emergency conditions. They also require regular inspections to make sure the brakes are in good working order.

Another important part is the overspeed governor. The ASME A17.1 code mandates that the overspeed governor should be able to detect when the elevator is going too fast and trigger the safety gear to stop the car. And if you’re installing a new elevator, the code has requirements for things like the strength of the elevator cables, the design of the hoistway doors, and the emergency communication systems.

In Canada, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) sets the standards for elevator safety. The CAN/CSA – B44 code is used. Similar to the ASME code in the US, it has comprehensive requirements for elevator safety. But there are some differences. For instance, the CSA code has specific provisions for cold climate operation. Since Canada has some pretty harsh winters, elevators need to be able to operate safely in low – temperature conditions. This could mean using special lubricants for moving parts and heaters in the control panels to prevent freezing.

Moving on to Europe, the European Union (EU) has a set of regulations known as the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). Elevators are considered machinery under this directive, and they need to meet certain safety requirements. The harmonized standards, like EN 81 – 20 and EN 81 – 50, provide the technical specifications for elevator safety.

These standards focus on things like the protection of passengers from entrapment. For example, the elevator doors should be designed in such a way that they can’t trap a passenger’s hand or body part. There are also requirements for the emergency stop buttons. They need to be easily accessible and clearly marked. And the EU standards also pay a lot of attention to the energy efficiency of elevators. With the growing concern for the environment, new elevators are expected to use less energy.

In Asia, different countries have their own compliance requirements. In Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) sets the elevator safety standards. Japanese standards are known for being very strict. They have high – tech requirements for safety features. For example, many Japanese elevators are equipped with advanced earthquake – resistant systems. These systems can detect seismic activity and take appropriate actions, like stopping the elevator at the nearest floor and opening the doors.

In China, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) along with relevant national standards govern elevator safety. The GB/T 7588 standard is widely used. It covers a wide range of safety aspects, from the structural integrity of the elevator car to the reliability of the control systems. With the rapid growth of high – rise buildings in China, there’s a big emphasis on the safety of high – speed elevators.

So, why do these different compliance requirements matter for an elevator safety system supplier like me? Well, first of all, we need to make sure that our products can meet the specific standards of each region. If we’re selling to the US, our elevator safety systems need to be ASME A17.1 compliant. If we’re targeting the EU market, we have to ensure that our products meet the relevant European standards.
